If you have ever wanted to get your website listed in the YAHOO directory you will know that the only way to get listed is to pay the $299 fee or $600 for sites with adult content.
The fee is an annual recurring charge so it is not too surprising that people have tried various “back doors” to gain an immediate listing for free.
You will also know that this fee does not guarantee that your site will be listed. It”s just an application fee which is non refundable. Your application fee is for YAHOO to review your application form and upon acceptance will add your site within seven days. If your site is rejected there are NO REFUNDS!!!
Having your site listed in the YAHOO directory has a great impact on your web sites ranking in the search engines as they spider the directory and if your site is found as listed it gains a higher ranking. However, waiting for the search engines to spider the YAHOO directory and then update your sites ranking can take up to four months before being reflected in your sites ranking.
It is no wonder that people have always been looking for that magic “back door” to YAHOO and until recently there was one such back door which has since been firmly closed.
Enter the magical market of “Expired Domains”………….
Once upon a time it was possible to search for domains that were about to expire and which were also listed in the YAHOO directory. Once these domains expired anyone could register them and use them as a domain for their web site. In doing so they gained an instant listing in YAHOO (plus every ranking that the domain had gained in every search engine).
Rather than risking a couple of hundred dollars with the application fee and having to wait four months for their web sites search engine ranking to get a boost, this seemed the perfect answer.
But the door is now closed…………
Due to unscrupulous web site owners and domain name brokers taking advantage of this, YAHOO closed this loop hole by simply placing a filter to automatically delete any domain from its directory as soon as it expired. This rendered any expired domain worthless in terms of YAHOO worth.
The reason that YAHOO charge the fee that they charge is because every application is reviewed by a human. The site MUST meet their criteria and any that don”t are not included. In YAHOO”S view this is to ensure that all sites listed in their directory are relevant which increases the value of being listed in their directory.
This is also the view taken by the search engines which is why they place your web site higher within their own listings as they know your web site has been reviewed by a human.
There still remains ONE SINGLE option to get your web site listed in the YAHOO directory and that is by paying the required fee. It”s no brainer. If your web site meets their criteria then your site WILL be accepted.
Your site won”t get rejected because the person reviewing it is having a bad day or because of any other reason apart from it not meeting the conditions which they require.
If you are thinking of purchasing a domain which is currently listed in the YAHOO directory then save your money. As soon as it expires it will no longer be listed and therefore of no YAHOO value.
That isn”t to say however that you shouldn”t purchase a domain name for other reasons. The domain may well have had a good amount of traffic in its former life of which your site will continue to benefit from.
Just don”t be fooled in to thinking that it will still be listed in YAHOO because it won”t be there!!!
