The novel’s protagonist, Jordan Young, and some of his friends create a unique, secret fantasy football league, composed of some of Wall Street’s wealthiest stock brokers, bankers, attorneys and entrepreneurs. They make fantasy teams, using various professional football players and pit their own teams against each other on Sundays, hoping to win the Fantasy Bowl and the enormous prize that comes with it.
Every year, the participants’ insatiable hunger for bigger prizes increases, and, eventually, the entry fee into the league grows to $1 million, while the championship purse expands to a staggering $30 million. With the outcome of every fantasy football contest relying heavily on the performance of individual players in National Football League games, someone in the league realizes that he can control his own fantasy games by eliminating some key NFL players each week.
A star running back is savagely stabbed in Cleveland, a wide receiver is drugged in Boston, and a quarterback is kidnapped near Minneapolis. Local police are mystified by the strange events.
The FBI hasn’t a single clue.
With no evidence to connect the events, the NFL forges ahead with contests each weekend, as do the participants in the secret league, one stalking his next clueless victim, as he continues to win fantasy football games and creeps closer each week to the lottery-sized trophy.
