Every business requires marketing to let the potential customers know where to get the goods and services they need. Some forms of marketing are prohibitive to the small business because of the high cost. Television advertising, for example, is just not fiscally prudent for small businesses with limited budget figures for advertising.
As a small business, I’ve had to turn to successful ways of marketing which do not cost a great deal of money. One of the best ways to market is simply using my business card. Whenever the opportunity arises to network with people who might require my services, I make certain I get my card into their hands before we finish our conversation. They may not need my services today, but in a week, a month or a year, they may call for assistance. I’ve even had people pass my cards along to a friend or associate who needed my services. A well-designed, striking and memorable business card can do the same for you.
Networking through business groups and meetings is another great tool. Chamber of Commerce meetings provide the opportunity to meet and speak with fellow members of the business base in my area. Oftentimes this results in a mutually beneficial relationship. I may have need of their business good or services and they may have need of my services. Anytime I am invited to attend a meeting where networking can be performed, I place it on my schedule and use the time to meet new people who may become new clients.
“Seasonal cards make a wonderful tool to remind
your former clients that you did a great job”
Another great marketing tool that is very inexpensive is mail-outs to previous clients. I regularly send my clients a handwritten note that says, basically, “Hello, how are you doing? My business is growing and I now have a new service I can provide to your firm.” Then I list the new product or service.
Seasonal cards make a wonderful tool to remind your former clients that you did a great job for them. A nice holiday card with a note about how much I enjoyed working with
them and hope to work with them again in the coming year can go far toward keeping your business in the forefront of their minds when they may need to turn to a business such as yours.
An opt-in newsletter from your firm’s website can be another great tool. When you first begin to develop your newsletter listing, email all your past clients and ask their permission to place them on the newsletter email list. Most will probably be glad to hear from you, but a few may not wish to receive your newsletter. Don’t be offended; just don’t add their names to the list.
For your very best clients, you may consider keeping your business in their minds by sending a special holiday card created by a graphic designer or a small gift at Christmas or as a thank you after completing a profitable transaction. A potted plan, a gift basket — or even better — a special ornament you’ve had designed and created which highlights your business in some way, can be much appreciated and a reminder that they should call you about a project coming up soon.
“By creating the right “branding” of your firm through these
materials, people will come to recognize you. “
Always put your best foot forward when performing your marketing. Be sure you business materials show your firm to their best advantage. Creating the right image ensure that your cards, brochures, mail-outs, pamphlets, or other sales material is the best investment you can make in marketing. By creating the right “branding” of your firm through these materials, people will come to recognize you. After all, we all recognize logos of various companies. Make your firm one of those that are well-recognized in the marketplace!
