(ARA) – A lot of people consider themselves shutterbugs. They take picture after picture of the same person, place or event, just to make sure they capture that perfect image in time; but when it comes time to process your film, how many images will you want to keep?
“Most people only get a handful of images they want to frame or put in photo albums. The rest end up in drawers, boxes, or the trash, making people feel like they’ve wasted their money,” says Alan Housley, vice president of marketing of PhotoWorks, an online digital and film developing business based in Seattle.
To get around that problem, a lot of people have entered the digital revolution. With digital cameras, there is no film to waste. Images are stored on a memory card, which allows the consumer to pick and choose the images they want to print and get rid of the rest. “Now film photographers can enjoy that same luxury,” says Housley.
PhotoWorks has just launched a new service on its Web site called Pick Your Prints which gives customers the option of customizing their orders using print credits. “We process the film, then post the images to an online account. Customers can then login to our Web site and choose the images they want to print. The bad ones, we call them ‘duds,’ never have to be printed,” says Housley. In addition, Pick Your Prints customers can also order multiples and enlargements from that same roll of film, similar to a portrait gallery, but without the hefty price tag.
Here’s how it works. You get 24 print credits for each 24-exposure roll of film you send in and 36 print credits for each 36-exposure roll. If you choose to get 3” x 5” or 4” x 6” prints made, they cost you one print credit apiece. Each 5” x 7” print costs two print credits, and 8” x 10”s are four print credits.
“If you have one image on the roll you really like, you can get a handful of 5” x 7” or 8” x 10” prints to give out to family and friends without spending anything extra,” says Housely. “Unused print credits will remain in your account for up to a year so there’s no use it or loose it kind of pressure.”
The Pick Your Prints program works with 24 and 36-exposure C-41 film processing. The cost is $8.95 for each 24-exposure roll and $12.95 for each 36-exposure roll.
